A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the My Morning Jacket Concert...

I saw My Morning Jacket, Jason Mraz, and some other up and coming musicians at the Louisville Palace about four or five years ago, and back then, I didn’t care one bit about MMJ. At the time, I was still in my post-collegiate 1990s alternative rock phase and too distracted by my new-found appreciation for Jason Mraz to be enamored with their hippy-ethereal, long haired swinging display. So it passed me right by when my husband told me during the Palace show that some of the band members were from Hikes Point where I grew up.

The concert scene

Is it just me or have there been great concerts this summer? With DMB and MMJ in town with only a week to separate them and all the cool stuff going on at Horseshoe, it's like all of a sudden we're back on the map.

The palace has done a good job of carrying the torch for semi-major shows for the past several years and Production Simple brings in great stuff, but when I was growing up in Southern Indiana, it really seemed as though EVERY major tour stopped at either Freedom Hall or the Gardens.

Welcome To His Nightmare

Alice Cooper first made a name for himself (quite literally—his real name is Vincent Furnier) in the late 1960s as daring showman and a solid craftsman of songs. His shock-rock antics yielded Cooper numerous radio hits, and his ground-breaking albums have inspired legions of aspiring musicians.

A Double Dose Of The Blues: Buddy Guy & George Thorogood Hit Horseshoe

Over the last 50 years, blues stylist Buddy Guy has won more W.C. Handy awards than anyone can count. He has also scooped up a handful of Grammy Awards and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

However, his critical acclaim and commercial success were not automatic. Guy was 21 when he first settled in Chicago and landed work as a session player on recordings by such notables as Howlin’ Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson.

Varanese Celebrates First Birthday

Next Wednesday August 20, 2008 Varanese will celebrate its first birthday. After a year of exceeding expectations the Frankfort Avenue eatery will celebrate with half priced drinks all evening, dinner specials, complimentary pass hors d’ oeuvres and live jazz from the Jeff Sherman Trio. Rumor has it the mayor or someone from the mayor’s office will be on hand during the festivities. Apparently they really like to thank businesses with interesting menus, deep wine selections and unique environments for doing well and contributing to the local economy.
